The Vocative (النِّدَاءُ)

Learn the vocative construction in Arabic using يَا and other particles, including the case rules for definite, indefinite, and annexed vocative nouns.

Basic Vocative with يَا

The vocative (النِّدَاء) is used to call or address someone directly. The most common vocative particle is يَا. Basic rule for simple definite nouns (مُفْرَد مَعْرِفَة or resembling it): The called noun (المُنَادَى) is in the nominative form but WITHOUT tanwīn, built on the ḍamma (مَبْنِيّ عَلَى الضَّمّ): • يَا مُحَمَّدُ (O Muhammad!) • يَا رَجُلُ (O man!) - even though رَجُل is grammatically indefinite, when used as a specific address it acts as definite • يَا طَالِبُ (O student!) The المُنَادَى does NOT take the definite article ال after يَا: • CORRECT: يَا رَجُلُ • INCORRECT: يَا الرَّجُلُ Exception: يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّجُلُ (O man!) - أَيُّهَا/أَيَّتُهَا is used as a bridge when you need to address a definite noun with ال. • يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ (O people!) • يَا أَيَّتُهَا المَرْأَةُ (O woman!)

يَا مُحَمَّدُ، تَعَالَ هُنَا
yā muḥammadu, taʿāla hunā
O Muhammad, come here
Simple proper noun vocative: مُحَمَّدُ is مَبْنِيّ عَلَى الضَّمّ (built on ḍamma). No tanwīn.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، اِتَّقُوا اللَّهَ
yā ayyuhā an-nāsu, ittaqū allāha
O people, fear God
Vocative with definite noun using أَيُّهَا as bridge. النَّاسُ keeps its ال and is nominative.
يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ المُطْمَئِنَّةُ
yā ayyatuhā an-nafsu al-muṭmaʾinnatu
O tranquil soul
Feminine form: أَيَّتُهَا for addressing feminine nouns with ال. Quranic verse (89:27).
يَا طَالِبُ، اُدْرُسْ جَيِّدًا
yā ṭālibu, udrus jayyidan
O student, study well
Generic address: طَالِبُ is مَبْنِيّ عَلَى الضَّمّ. It refers to a specific person being addressed.
