Grammar
Feminine verbal noun (maṣdar) of اتَّقَى (Form VIII). From وَقَى (to protect/guard). Literally means 'self-protection' - protecting oneself from God's displeasure through obedience.
Culture
Taqwā is the highest virtue in Islam. The Quran states: 'The most honored of you in the sight of God is the most righteous (atqā) among you' (49:13).
