عَصَى

ʿaṣā

he disobeyed / he rebelled

A2verbroot: ع-ص-ي

فَعَصَىٰ فِرْعَوْنُ الرَّسُولَ

fa-ʿaṣā Firʿawnu ar-rasūl

But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger (73:16)

أَهْلَكَ

ahlaka

he destroyed / he annihilated

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِنَ الْقُرُونِ مِنْ بَعْدِ نُوحٍ

wa-kam ahlaknā mina al-qurūni min baʿdi Nūḥ

And how many generations have We destroyed after Noah (17:17)

نَجَّى

najjā

he saved / he rescued

A2verbroot: ن-ج-و

فَأَنْجَيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ إِلَّا امْرَأَتَهُ

fa-anjaynāhu wa-ahlahū illā imraʾatah

So We saved him and his family, except his wife (27:57)

بِرٌّ

birr

righteousness / piety / goodness

A2nounroot: ب-ر-ر

لَنْ تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّى تُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ

lan tanālū al-birra ḥattā tunfiqū mimmā tuḥibbūn

You will never attain righteousness until you spend from what you love (3:92)

فَاحِشَةٌ

fāḥishah

indecency / immorality / grave sin

وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ

wa-lā taqrabū al-fawāḥisha mā ẓahara minhā wa-mā baṭan

And do not approach immoralities, what is apparent of them and what is concealed (6:151)

إِثْمٌ

ithm

sin / guilt / wrongdoing

وَذَرُوا ظَاهِرَ الْإِثْمِ وَبَاطِنَهُ

wa-dharū ẓāhira al-ithmi wa-bāṭinah

And leave what is apparent of sin and what is concealed of it (6:120)

مَعْرُوفٌ

maʿrūf

good deed / what is recognized as right

A2nounroot: ع-ر-ف

وَأْمُرْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَانْهَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ

waʾmur bil-maʿrūfi wanha ʿani al-munkar

And enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong (31:17)

مُنْكَرٌ

munkar

evil deed / what is rejected as wrong

A2nounroot: ن-ك-ر

كَانُوا لَا يَتَنَاهَوْنَ عَنْ مُنْكَرٍ فَعَلُوهُ

kānū lā yatanāhawna ʿan munkarin faʿalūh

They did not forbid one another from wrongdoing they committed (5:79)

حَلَالٌ

ḥalāl

lawful / permissible

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوا مِمَّا فِي الْأَرْضِ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا

yā ayyuhā an-nāsu kulū mimmā fī al-arḍi ḥalālan ṭayyibā

O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good (2:168)

حَرَامٌ

ḥarām

forbidden / sacred / inviolable

قُلْ تَعَالَوْا أَتْلُ مَا حَرَّمَ رَبُّكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ

qul taʿālaw atlu mā ḥarrama rabbukum ʿalaykum

Say: Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited to you (6:151)

فَرْضٌ

farḍ

obligation / religious duty

سُورَةٌ أَنْزَلْنَاهَا وَفَرَضْنَاهَا

sūratun anzalnāhā wa-faraḍnāhā

A surah which We have sent down and made obligatory (24:1)

سَمَاءٌ

samāʾ

sky / heaven

أَفَلَمْ يَنْظُرُوا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَوْقَهُمْ كَيْفَ بَنَيْنَاهَا

afalam yanẓurū ilā as-samāʾi fawqahum kayfa banaynāhā

Have they not looked at the sky above them - how We structured it? (50:6)
